ABOUT THERAtivity

THERAtivity is a therapeutic approach developed to establish a safe environment which fosters creativity; it is done so by encouraging children and teens to express themselves in the ways they feel most comfortable. Everyone has the ability to resolve his/her own struggles and therapy is about unlocking the unique potential to do so.

Alyse Nishimura developed THERAtivity after working collaboratively with families for over 10 years. Alyse is a registered Social Worker (RSW) holding a Master of Social Work (MSW). The primary goal of THERAtivity is to improve family functioning through self-expression and improved communication.

While children and teens experience stress they often express it differently than adults. Adolescents generally do not have the language skills needed to voice their concerns and the expression of these emotions can be seen either through problematic behaviors at home, school, with peers, or by turning emotions inward. Alyse works with each family to discover a child or teen’s unique skill set and interests such as music, art, writing, etc. and then encourages clients to use these skills to express his or her emotions. Using creativity to help children or teens express themselves also helps caregivers break down barriers and find alternative ways to communicate more effectively; providing invaluable tools to continue the progress from therapy at home.
